Troubleshooting: The App Can't Find My Foghorn

The Puckhead app talks to your Foghorn over Bluetooth, and Bluetooth likes things a certain way. When the device list comes up empty, run down this list — it's ordered by how often each one is the answer.

1. The basics

2. Only one phone at a time

A Foghorn talks to one phone at a time. If it's already connected to another phone in the house — a spouse's, a kid's, your old phone on the charger — it stops advertising and no one else can find it. Close the Puckhead app on the other phone (or turn its Bluetooth off) and scan again.

This is the sneakiest cause on the list. If the Foghorn "randomly" appears and disappears, another phone is usually the reason.

3. App permissions

The app needs permission to scan for Bluetooth devices:

If you denied a permission popup during first launch, this is almost certainly your issue.

4. Turn it off and on again — both of them

  1. Unplug the Foghorn, count to ten, plug it back in. Wait ~30 seconds for it to boot.
  2. Toggle your phone's Bluetooth off and on.
  3. Close the Puckhead app fully and reopen it, then scan.

That combination clears the vast majority of stubborn cases.

5. Still nothing?

If a second phone can't see it either, open a support ticket and tell us: what phone you're using, whether the Foghorn's screen/lights come on when plugged in, and whether it has ever connected before or this is first-time setup. Those three answers usually point straight at it.
