Firmware Updates: Keeping Your Foghorn Current

Your Foghorn updates itself. There's no app store, no "check for updates" chore — just a couple of things worth knowing about how it works.

When updates happen

The Foghorn checks for new firmware every time it's plugged in, and once a day while it stays powered. If a new version is waiting, it downloads over Wi-Fi, installs, and reboots itself — usually done within a couple of minutes.

That's the whole system. The practical takeaway: a Foghorn that stays plugged in stays current. One that lives in a closet between seasons catches up the first time you plug it back in — give it a few minutes of power and Wi-Fi before the season opener.

During an update

• Leave it plugged in. Pulling power mid-install is the one way to make an update go badly.
• The Foghorn may reboot once or twice — normal.
• Your settings (team, league, sounds, delay, Wi-Fi) all survive updates.
• Custom audio on the SD card is untouched.

Checking your version

Open the Puckhead app, connect to your Foghorn, and look in the device settings — the firmware version is listed there. You don't need to track version numbers, but support may ask for it if you file a ticket (it tells us a lot).

"My old Foghorn stopped showing scores"

If a Foghorn has been unplugged for a long time, it may be running firmware old enough that it's talking to a retired server. Those units go quiet on purpose — no scores, no sounds — but the update path still works: plug it in, connect it to Wi-Fi, and leave it powered. It picks up the new firmware automatically (on plug-in or at its daily check) and comes back to life on its own.

If it's been powered and online for more than a day and still shows nothing, open a support ticket — include the firmware version from the app if you can reach it.
