Adding Custom Audio to your foghorn

Want your own goal horn, your own win song, or an inside-joke sound when the other team scores? The Foghorn plays your files first whenever it finds one named with -custom — no app changes, no settings, just files on the SD card.

How it works

The Foghorn's sounds live on its SD card, organized in one folder per league (nhl, nfl, mlb, ...), with files named by team abbreviation. Before playing any standard sound, the Foghorn checks for a custom version. If it's there, yours wins.

There are four custom slots per team:

File nameWhen it plays
COL-custom.mp3Your team scores (replaces the goal horn)
COL-win-custom.mp3Your team wins the game
COL-start-custom.mp3The game starts
COL-bad-custom.mp3The other team scores

(COL here is Colorado — swap in your own team's abbreviation.)

Step by step

  1. Unplug the Foghorn and pop out the SD card. On most computers you'll need an SD card reader.
  2. Open the card — you'll see a folder for each league. Go into your league's folder (for example nhl).
  3. Copy your audio file in, named exactly like the table above: your team's abbreviation in CAPITALS, the -custom part in lowercase, ending in .mp3. Example: DET-win-custom.mp3 inside the nhl folder.
  4. Eject the card safely, put it back in the Foghorn, and plug it in. Done — the next goal plays your sound.

Not sure of your team's abbreviation? It's shown next to every team in the Puckhead app's team list.

Troubleshooting

My custom sound doesn't play. Check the three usual suspects: the file name (abbreviation in capitals, -custom spelled exactly, .mp3 on the end), the folder (it has to be inside your league's folder, not the card's root), and the format (a renamed m4a is still an m4a — actually convert it).

Sound plays but it's distorted or crackly. Re-export the MP3 at a standard bitrate (96 kbps, 44.1 kHz). Extremely high bitrates can stutter.

The Foghorn says the SD card isn't detected. Reseat the card, and make sure it was ejected safely from your computer. If it still fails, reformat as FAT32 and re-copy the sounds.
